Five Questions to Ask Before Touring a Senior Community

By Ray PierceMay 28, 20264 min read

Every senior living community looks lovely on a Tuesday morning tour. The lobby smells like fresh cookies. Someone is playing the piano. The marketing director is warm and confident.

None of that tells you what daily life is like. These five questions do.

1. "What is the average tenure of your care staff?"

Turnover is the single biggest predictor of care quality. A community where the same aides have been there for years has built real relationships with residents. A community with constant turnover — no matter how beautiful the building — cannot deliver consistent care.

2. "How do you communicate with families when something changes?"

Ask for specifics. Do they call? Email? Use an app? What counts as "something worth calling about"? If the answer is vague, the communication will be too.

3. "May I see the activities calendar from last month — not this month?"

This month's calendar is a marketing document. Last month's shows what actually happened, including cancellations.

4. "What is your policy when a resident's needs increase?"

Every community says they support "aging in place." Very few actually do without a move to a different floor or a different building. Get the specifics in writing.

5. "Can I eat a meal here, unannounced, on a weekend?"

Any community that says no is telling you something important. Any community that says yes — and doesn't scramble to prepare — is showing you the truth.
